Iconic Dominion Rd

As a bin hire, skip bin contractor who has probably driven up Dominion Rd a thousand times I thought I might share some of its more interesting facts and history with you. Dominion Rd was originally named Mount Roskill Rd. The name changed in 1907 the year NZ became a Dominion and gained a far greater level of independence from England The attraction originally apart from the fertile volcanic soil was the quarrying at Mt Roskill and Three Kings. Initially Mt Roskill Road was a toll road and cheap labour for construction was provided courtesy of nearby Mt Eden prison. And unbelievable now, at the time cows, pigs and chickens roamed freely in the area. Dominion Road bisects Eden Valley where it runs north south for 7.3 km. It runs straight for almost 6km making it the longest straight road in the Auckland isthmus. The road rises and falls as it crosses several lava flows. Now days almost 50,000 people a week travel by bus up and down it, very close to the number of cars that commute weekly. The mutton birds 1992 classic song Dominion Rd about a half-way house half way down Dominion Road was written about it. “Dominion Road is bending under its own weight.” What a great lyric!
